Taxi drivers in Beijing, China have been told to 'fix up, look sharp' ahead of the Olympic Games there in 2008.

City officials are concerned that unsightly cab drivers may give off the wrong impression to visitors and have issued some guidelines.

The dyeing of hair has been deemed to be unattractive and unwanted by authorities, particularly those who choose to colour their hair red.

In addition, female drivers have been asked to stop wearing garish jewellery, such as big earrings, reports Beijing News.

Yao Kuo from Beijing's transport management bureau said: "Some drivers don't care about their appearance and this has a negative impact on the whole industry.

"A person's hairstyle and accessories are their personal business, but cab drivers must remember they are a window for China's capital."

Drivers have also been asked to avoid spitting, swearing and overcharging passengers at least during the duration of the games.

They have also been told that if they do not use their meters for a fare they will have their licence revoked.
